The Scientists

Call them scientists; they become scientists.
Every year at this time of the year during the launch of the Mathematics and Science Week, the students look forward to a time of innovation and creation. Both teachers and students work hand in hand to allow the left brain to emerge !

Students ranging from the lower forms to the upper forms get together for a time of learning and sharing exhibiting their skills and talents.

So many coins; I was asked to select as many coins as I can and throw them into a ...

...a container filled with water to the brim ! Impossible ! My not so good left brain told me it was not possible. How can it be possible? And yet; guess what ? I managed to throw in 17 coins without the water spilling out ! Not bad. Later I was told that this was possible because the surface tension, like an elastic sheet was formed by cohesion force between molecules. This surface tension can prevent water from overflowing and even allow certain denser material to float. So it explained why I was able to insert 17 coins without displaying the water. Still fail to understand fully.

The cup of lava conducted by a group of sweet young things from 2 G. How do you form lava?

A mixture of oil, water and some coloring are poured into a jar.

I know I take Panadol Soluble when I have a fever, aches or pains. But I never knew that when I add it to the mixture in the jar, it will cause an effect where it releases air bubbles to travel up and down; similar to the lava lamp. So, use it for geography lessons to demonstrate lava release from volcanic mountains !

With hydrogen peroxide the children could create a foamy fountain...

Shakir and Hannah of 3 Amanah told me that by adding some liquid soap, potassium iodide and coloring to hydrogen peroxide the effect is oops!

Yes, the effect is culminated in a foamy fountain.

Robotics is crazily enjoyed by the robots of the school !

Loong Yi, son of the robotics teacher of the school reiterated that with the combination of electronics and mechanisms, we can manifest various robotic creations which can serve a myriad of purposes. Whether it be a mesmerizing amalgamation of mechanisms which transfers marble around and around, or an intelligent artist which can draw accurate graphs. The possibilities are limitless with the technology of robotics today. Why do you think the team was sent by the nation to Abu Dhabi for the interntional competition late last year? Thanks to such venues as the Maths and Science exhibition.

Puan Shanta, what do you think you are doing?

It is an air cannon creatively exemplified through the dustbin ! The "ball" of air that shoots out of the cannon is actually a flat vortex of air, similar to rings of smoke blown by a talented cigar smoker. A vortex is generated when the exiting air from the bucket at the center of the hole is traveling faster than the air exiting around the edge of the hole.

This also demonstrated that air occupies space; and the flying smoke rings are an added bonus.

We now can safely say that all we need is a bicycle for us to blend in the forest...

How does one blend an orange drink without current?

Yes; pull the wheel and cycle; cycle; cycle...

Powered by the cycling process, energy is exuberated and there the blended orange juice for your perusal !

Still many others were seeking and looking for more discoveries and inventions...

This young man here had his straight As in last year's SPM; I believed he was one of the chief engineers behind the show last year. He smiled. He had his chance last year. Tharvin said he missed school badly and looked with longing eyes at the fun and creations. He must have felt the nostalgia. The exhibition had done him good.

The Maths and Science exhibition; carried out with a loud bang.
